Why you shouldn’t sleep in your dentures.
A conventional denture is meant to come out at night. Leaving it in around the clock keeps tissue covered, holds plaque against the gums, and accelerates the bone change that makes the next denture looser.

Give the jaw and gums a rest
A denture applies constant pressure to the ridge. That pressure helps it stay in during the day. Overnight, the tissue needs time without coverage. Sleeping in a conventional denture speeds bone remodeling under the base. The bony ridge shrinks; the denture that once sealed no longer does.
Hygiene and infection
Saliva flow drops at night. Plaque and yeast stay against the gums under a denture that never comes out. The result can be denture stomatitis — red, sore tissue, sometimes with cracking at the corners of the mouth — or a yeast infection that needs antifungal treatment.
Remove the denture, brush it with a proper cleanser, and clean the gums and any remaining teeth. Soak the prosthesis overnight in a solution safe for its materials. Metal partials should not sit in household bleach.
Broader health
Leaving dentures in overnight has been associated with a higher risk of pneumonia in older or medically fragile patients, likely from inhaling organisms that colonize the prosthesis. Nightly removal is a simple habit with a serious reason behind it.
Fixed implant hybrids are different — they stay in unless we remove them in the office. If you are unsure which kind you have, ask. Do not guess from a blog post if your prosthesis is screwed in place.

Is it ever okay to sleep in dentures?
For most conventional complete and partial dentures, no. Short exceptions after surgery or during a specific healing phase are by instruction only. Implant-fixed prostheses follow a different rule.
What should I soak dentures in overnight?
Use a denture cleanser compatible with acrylic and, if present, metal. Water is better than nothing if you are traveling. Avoid hot water, which can warp acrylic.
My dentures hurt if I take them out. What then?
That usually means the fit or the bite is wrong, or the tissue is inflamed. Keeping them in is not the fix. Call the office so we can adjust or reline them.
