Back to Worn teeth
PATIENT GUIDE

Enamel-friendly foods for your teeth.

Enamel is the hard outer layer of a tooth. It does not grow back. Acid, grinding, and years of wear are why many patients arrive here with shortened teeth and a bite that no longer works.

What weakens enamel

Acid is the main dietary enemy. Soda, fruit juice, flavored waters with citric acid, citrus held against the teeth, and frequent snacking on sweets or starchy crackers keep the mouth in an acidic state. The enamel softens; brushing immediately after an acid attack can wear it further.

Wait to brush after acidic foods or drinks. Rinse with water first. Sugar-free gum can help saliva recover when it is appropriate for your restorations.

Foods that support enamel

Calcium-rich foods — cheese, yogurt, canned salmon with bones, almonds, and leafy greens — support the minerals teeth are built from. Cheese also helps neutralize acid after a meal.

Vitamin D helps the body use calcium. Phosphorus (eggs, meat, fish), vitamin A, and magnesium (leafy greens, bananas, whole grains) belong in the same picture. Water through the day supports saliva, which is the mouth’s own rinse.

When diet is not the whole story

Grinding, reflux, and a collapsed bite wear enamel even when the diet is careful. If teeth are already short, cupped, or chipping, food lists will not rebuild them. That is prosthodontic work: protect what remains, restore function, then esthetics.

If you already wear dentures, food choices still matter for the remaining teeth and for how you chew with a prosthesis. See our pages on removable dentures and worn teeth for how we treat those problems.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What patients ask about this.

Can enamel grow back?

No. Enamel has no living cells. You can slow further loss and restore worn teeth with crowns, onlays, or a full-mouth plan when wear is widespread.

Is sparkling water as harmful as soda?

Plain sparkling water is milder than sugary soda, but frequent acid exposure still adds up. Water is the safer default between meals.

When should I see a prosthodontist for worn teeth?

When teeth are short, sensitive, chipping, or the bite feels collapsed. Isolated fillings will not fix a wear pattern that involves the whole mouth.
