Composite is tooth-colored filling material bonded into a cavity or chip. It is useful when the remaining tooth is sound. It is the wrong answer when wear, a failing bite, or a large broken cusp needs a crown or a coordinated plan.

What composite is for
Composite lets us restore small-to-moderate decay or a chipped edge while keeping most of the natural tooth. Shade can be matched. The bond depends on isolation, enamel quality, and how much tooth structure is left to hold the filling.
Composite is not as wear-resistant as well-planned porcelain in a heavy bite. Patients who grind, or who have already lost a lot of enamel, often need onlays or crowns rather than another large filling.
How this practice uses restorative materials
Las Vegas Prosthodontics is a specialty practice. We do not offer disconnected, one-tooth-at-a-time dentistry — an isolated filling here and a crown there with no plan for the mouth. When composite is used, it is part of establishing health before larger restorative work, or as a conservative repair that fits the overall design.
If several fillings have failed, teeth are worn, or previous dentistry is breaking, the question is usually not “which filling material” but whether the bite and the remaining teeth can support another repair.
When a filling is not enough
Cusps that have split, fillings that keep falling out, or teeth that have been patched until little enamel remains belong on a prosthodontic treatment plan. Do you place routine fillings?
We are not a patch-and-go general office. Small repairs can be part of preparing a mouth for specialty care. Isolated fillings without a plan for the whole mouth are not what this practice is built to do.
How long do composite fillings last?
Longevity depends on size, bite forces, hygiene, and whether the tooth was a good candidate. A filling that keeps failing is often a sign the tooth needs a different restoration.
Is composite better than amalgam?
Composite is tooth-colored and conservative when the cavity is suitable. Material choice is secondary to whether the tooth and the bite can support the repair.
